Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Welcome to Week 5 of Term 1! Our weather in the last fortnight has certainly been keeping us on our toes! I want to congratulate our students for demonstrating resilience and maintaining their learning, and positive behaviour even when it has been hot and tiring, or cold and raining.

I would also like to thank students for their respect that is being shown to others and to the school when they are finished with their icy-poles or ice-creams. There have been very few rouge wrappers, and those that have been incorrectly disposed of have been picked up by vigilant students, keen to keep our school clean!

Out of School Hours Care Update:

Please be reminded that tomorrow, Thursday the 29th of February, is the last day of our OSHC service. I have some positive news to share with regards to OSHC. Further contact has been made with a third party provider, and it is likely that we will be able to offer the service again in the near future. I would like to thank the families impacted by the suspension for your understanding and patience in this process.

Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre:

We were fortunate to have Questacon Science Circus visit our school today. The students and staff learned about a variety of science concepts in a fun and engaging way! Our students showed a lot of understanding of the topics covered and some were even able to participate in demonstrations! My personal favourite was using a giant slinky to represent sound traveling through the air. I encourage you to ask your child/ren about their favourite part!

Sports on Friday:

The weather on Friday is looking to be around 28 degrees. Remember to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide. We will be taking our school marquee for shade, but there is no shaded areas where the events are taking place. We ask that you take this into account and ensure sunscreen is worn by all who attend the day. It may also be appropriate for children to bring a light weight long sleeved option. Children may wear sunglasses, but will be responsible for looking after them.

The sports are a curriculum aligned event, and it is expected that all students will participate in their events. We ask you encourage your child/ren to participate, but are understanding of differences in needs for individuals. If your child may be distressed by participation or encouragement to participate, we ask that you inform classroom teachers so that efforts can be made to accommodate this.

Next Week:

I will be out of the school Tuesday, part of Thursday and Fridy, next week. Please see classroom teachers or Mrs Trickett, in my place. You may also email me if the matter is not time sensitive.

Have a great fortnight,
Tamara Halket

Some of the exciting things we have done are:

  • Measuring our heights
  • Measuring our feet
  • Built bridges from Lego
  • Sown our names
  • Hunted for bugs with tweezers
  • Dab painted our names with paint

Tomorrow (Thursday) we are having a Teddy Bear’s Picnic and we invite all students and staff to bring a teddy to school and join us for lunch.

Grade 3/4 News

Investigating Numbers

We have had a great time this week investigating place value in maths. The Grade 3 students focussed on renaming and were very engaged at discovering different ways to make the same number using MAB manipulatives. It was great to see a lot of collaboration and resilience as they worked at mastering this concept. The Grade 4’s have been working on ordering numbers to three decimal places and have worked hard at gaining a deeper understanding of this concept. The Grade 4’s also investigated finding the average of a set and were able to use data that we had gathered from previous tasks to do this. We continue to work on our maths knowledge through a range of hands-on, real-world tasks to provide our students with the best opportunity to apply their learning in real world situations.

Grade 5/6 News

From Mrs T.

Last Thursday was our science online course; it was all to do with hot air. No comments please! My hair dryer came in handy as we inflated garbage bags and made table tennis balls dance! Such a fabulous opportunity for schools, I will keep looking for these gems online.

Zooper Doopers are selling well, we need to keep an eye on our target of getting the GRAC slides open for our Year 6 celebration!

We had hoped to do a yarn bomb drop on Wednesday for Valentine’s Day, but the weather delayed that till Friday. It takes a lot of work to craft 80 hearts, but our crochet fairies did it with time to spare. Thanks to Ange for her help dispersing their work. We are working on our next project, but my lips are sealed!

I went to see Roger Taylor on Friday afternoon ahead of the sausage sizzle. I handed over 4 permission slips for the Rotary Junior Community Award. I know there are two more students thinking about taking part. We will hold our first meeting on Friday. Laura Bowles and Lauren Hill have kindly agreed to help with aspects of this. My crochet fairies will be crocheting beanies for babies as part of their Community section. This is my first one, I hope you like it. Chloe’s Baby Jessica is my model.

We did a Learning Share at assembly about the Lego Robotics’ Kits. The students really enjoy STEM. I was fortunate enough yesterday to visit the Gippsland Tech School. I met with Dan who gave me a guided tour and we talked STEM. I could have stayed longer but he sent me details of all that we talked about. There will be different ways of presenting Future Problem Solvers next term. After I have completed some more of the Disability Inclusion work, I will begin to work on STEM throughout the school. If you have any questions about my work, please come and ask.
