Mathematics
At Willow Grove Primary School, we tailor learning programs to the individual needs of students. We are beginning to implement the new Victorian mathematics curriculum (2.0) in 2024.
Mathematics - About Mathematics - Victorian Curriculum (vcaa.vic.edu.au)
At Willow Grove Primary School we believe that all students can be numerate. We believe that we must provide students with the mathematical building blocks that will enable them to use numeracy throughout their lives. We believe that learning is on a continuum that can be accessed by all. Our goal is to meet students at their point of need and to stretch them to meet their highest potential. We believe that we can and must use problem solving, manipulatives and play based learning to foster students to meet their potential in their learning in the areas of mathematics and numeracy.
Specialist Subjects Curriculum
Art
Visual Art sessions run each week for Foundation to Year 6. Students build on their fine motor skills and experiment with various art materials to express their ideas, experiences, observations, and imagination. Students understand the elements and principles of Art and apply these to their artwork. Cultural, historical, and contemporary art in our world is also studied.
Students produce 2D and 3D art pieces around different themes and experiment with skills and techniques within painting, drawing, painting, collage, clay, construction, and textiles.
Through their art journey, students make decisions, problem-solve, experience challenges, interact with their peers, appreciate and respond to well-known artworks, self-evaluate, and use creative thinking. Students are proud to have their artwork displayed in our school corridors, our newsletter and on exhibition at the Tanjil Valley Art Show.
School Production
Every second year, all students participate in the School Production. This is a highlight of the year and their primary school journey and is a professional style production where students learn lines, dances, singing and making props and sets. The School Production is performed at Lowanna College and prepares students to be involved in high school, community, and professional productions in the future.
Previous productions have included An Aussie Outback Adventure, Porridge, Rock Bottom, Star Warts and Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits.
Physical Education
Willow Grove Primary has a fantastic physical education program, including Weekly 60-minute specialist Physical Education lessons for each class.
In the Junior grades, students work on their fundamental and perceptual motor skills with various equipment. In years 3-6, the focus is on game sense and understanding multiple sports. We welcome visiting sporting coaches and clubs to run sessions in sports such as AFL, Basketball, Tennis, Cricket, and Hockey. We access swimming lessons for all students and participate in team sports competitions with other local schools. Each year, the school competes in our District Athletics Carnival with a Junior and Senior program. Students can compete in sports that can take them to Division, Regional or State Championships.
Japanese
We offer an exciting and progressive Japanese program that introduces students to the language and culture of Japan.
Students from Foundation to Year Six learn Japanese once a week, emphasising reading and writing. Students enjoy communicating in Japanese through role plays, songs, and language games. They are introduced to hiragana and katakana characters (which form the Japanese alphabet) in Foundation and continue to read and write the script throughout the school.
